The original

Being first to the market, The BOTTLEBOX® is the original take-out container made of post-consumer recycled PET plastic. We have been using post-consumer recycled PET bottles since 2008. After the bottles have been sorted, ground into flakes and thoroughly washed, we turn them into something useful again.

And did you know that The BOTTLEBOX® containers can be recycled again and again? The demand continues to grow and we are happy keeping even more bottles out of landfills and reusing them as raw material in our manufacturing process.

Post-consumer recycled PET

Each year we verify and audit how much rPET we use in our manufacturing facilities. In 2016 DPI used 28% more recycled PET beverage bottles than in 2015. Since 2011, Direct Pack has used more than 2.8 billion recycled bottles. Check out our video that illustrates what that means! Thanks to all our loyal customers, we are saving a lot of bottles from landfill, and together we are making an important difference for the environment.

Sustainability Projects

Wanting to contribute to a better environment and staying in the forefront of developing better processes and business practices within the plastics industry, we are actively running many sustainability projects. Most of these projects are run in collaboration with our customers, suppliers and/or partners. Some of the many environmental benefits of these pilots include:

  • Increased recycling and recovery of PET containers
  • Increased diversion of food waste from landfills
  • Increased production of renewable fuel
  • Decreased greenhouse gas production

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

We are pro-active in the area of EPR and the BOTTLEBOX® containers, which contain up to 80% post consumer recycled PET, go beyond the California State AB837 requirements.

Through a unique pilot recovery pilot, we are closing the loop on our PET containers and thus meeting new EPR standards that will soon become law in California.  With assistance from NAPCOR (the National Association of PET Container Resources), we are collaborating with local Material Recovery Facilities to sort PET food containers from curbside recycling streams, reclaiming flake through local reclaimers, and producing new thermoformed containers from this recycled flake.

 

Piloting projects for Grocery Store PET recovery

We are also working with local MRF operators to recover thermoformed containers sorted at stores and baled at distribution centers, and from product destruction streams from large grocery chains. As with thermoforms sorted from curbside, grocery thermoforms will be recovered and reclaimed, and the resulting flake is used to produce new thermoformed containers used extensively by grocery chains. Talk about effectively closing the loop!

As we and our partners roll this from pilot to full-scale project, some of the biogas produced from food waste digested will be used at Direct Pack’s plant in Sun Valley. DPI will be able to fuel its factory equipment, trucks and forklifts with renewable biogas (CNG) made from food waste that is recovered when stores separate food waste from PET containers.
