SUN VALLEY, CALIF. (Nov. 10, 4:25 p.m. ET) -- Plastics PET recycler Global PET and Direct Pack Inc. have introduced the Bottle Box, a food container made from 100 percent recycled PET.
The package, which will be initially marketed in the western U.S., is designed for takeout foods, snacks, deli items and food entrees that do not exceed 165° Fahrenheit.
Global PET will manufacture the Bottle Box at its recently installed thermoforming line in Perris, Calif., added with the help of a $7 million grant from the state of California.
The companies said Bottle Box has an airtight and stackable button locking system and uses 21 percent less material on average than the products it is designed to replace.
Three-year-old DPI, a subsidiary of PMC Global Inc., manufacturers thermoformed containers from recycled PET, polylactic acid and virgin resins such as PET and polypropylene at its headquarters in Sun Valley, Calif., and four plants in the Asia/Pacific region.
Laura Murphy, vice president of marketing and sales for Direct Pack Inc. in Sun Valley, Calif., said the company will offer the packaging to customers in the food service, food processing, supermarket, agricultural and take-out markets.
Other companies, such as Peninsula Packaging in Exeter, Calif., also make clamshell food packaging from 100 percent PET.
Global PET recently entered into a 10-year supply agreement for 60 million pounds of recycled PET bottles annually with Plastic Recycling Corp. of California in Sonoma, Calif., which purchases PET bottles for resale to reclaimers.
