Gandhi Sifuentes, Director of Design and Engineering, leads a team of designers at DPI creating customized packaging based on the needs of their various trade clients. Their newest creation is the Bottle Box, an innovative product made from 100% recycled post consumer PET bottles.

– Gandhi please tell us little about your role as Director of Design and Engineering.
AT DPI my job is to design products that will differentiate our customers in the marketplace and provide the end user with a reliable and attractive container that does the job it is designed to do.

- What is so special about the design of the Bottle Box?
Even though the Bottle Box geometry is industry standard, our thoughts were to build in additional strength enabling us to lessen the amount of materials that we use. We in fact created a 21% reduction in material while still creating an attractive container. We also improved the locking features and the full perimeter seal giving the Bottle Box users a superior product. And even though this box is not customized from a client brief, which is how we would normally work; we are able to emboss a company logo directly onto the box for our trade customers.

- What do you believe is the impact of the Bottle Box?
Huge! We are giving consumer trash new life instead of sending it to a landfill.

Our partnership with Global PET Inc, is the key to the success of the Bottle Box.  Together we are creating food grade containers, produced from the thousands the PET bottles that are discarded by families everyday.

- What would you like to tell the folks about the Bottle Box?
The same thing that I tell my children, “That whenever you can make a difference, do so”. Every restaurant in California should be using this product. There is no extra cost incurred to use the bottle Box and it is yet another step toward helping our planet.

So next time you are in your local deli or getting your food to-go, ask the establishment if they use the Bottle Box. And next time you drop your water or soda bottle into the blue recycling bin, think about the potential journey it has ahead to become a Bottle Box. We can all do our part and be responsible with our used PET bottles.
